Honda Tadakazu

Japanese: 本多忠籌 - ほんだただかず
Honda Tadakazu

A feudal lord in the late Edo period, a senior councilor, and Danjo Daihitsu. Lord of Izumi Domain in Mutsu Province (Fukushima Prefecture) (15,000 koku). Born in 1754 (Genbun 4). In 1754 (Horeki 4), he succeeded to the domain and while devoting himself to the governance of the domain, he deepened his friendship with Matsudaira Sadanobu as an older friend. When Sadanobu joined the shogunate, he was appointed Kattekake Wakadoshiyori in July 1787 (Tenmei 7), Sobayonin in May 1788, Roju-rank, 20,000 koku, castle lord-rank in April 1790 (Kansei 2), and chamberlain in December 1793, and assisted Sadanobu in the administration of the Kansei Reforms. Even after Sadanobu's retirement, he remained in the shogunate and continued the reforms, but resigned in October 1798 due to illness. As a feudal lord, he actively contributed to the politics of his domain, such as banning infanticide, raising children, increasing the population, establishing gogura (a village storehouse), and working to stabilize the people's livelihood. He was so highly revered by the people of his domain that a shrine was built to honor him. He died on December 20, 1812.
