[Born] October 18, 1517. [Died] October 18, 1570, Rio de Janeiro Portuguese missionary. In 1549, he left Lisbon for Brazil, where he established the first Jesuit school and laid the foundations for evangelization. He also became the first Provincial of the Christian Church in Brazil (1553-59). He was appointed Provincial again in 1570, but died before the news reached him.
