Japanese: 信時潔 - のぶとききよし
Nobuto Kiyoshi - Nobuto Kiyoshi

Composer. Born in Osaka. Studied cello and composition at the Tokyo Music School, graduating in 1910 (Meiji 43) and completing a postgraduate course. In 1920 (Taisho 9), he studied composition under Georg Schumann in Germany. After returning to Japan, he became a professor at his alma mater. In 1942 (Showa 17), he became a member of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1963 (Showa 38), he was awarded the title of Person of Cultural Merit. His style of composition is solid and stately, based on the German classical technique, and includes many piano pieces such as "Konohashu" (1934), songs and choruses such as "Sara" (1935) and "Yamato ni wa" (1939). His symphonic piece "Kaido Tosei" (1940), which premiered at the 2600th anniversary of the founding of Japan, is often performed as a full-fledged cantata composed by a Japanese composer, and his chorus piece "Umiyukaba" (1937), with lyrics by Otomo no Yakamochi, was often sung during World War II.
