A German encyclopedia. The first edition was published by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856) in 1840-1855. The 6th edition (24 volumes) and the 7th edition (12 volumes) published in 1924-1930 are well known. The 8th edition, which reflected Nazism, was discontinued after 9 volumes. After World War II, a new edition (8 volumes) was published in Leipzig, East Germany in 1961-1964, and a 25-volume encyclopedia was published in Mannheim, West Germany in 1971-1979.
