A city in northern Miyazaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1933. The central city is located on the delta of the Gokase River, and it has been a castle town since the Middle Ages. Since the construction of the ammonium sulfate plant of Nippon Chisso Hiryo (later Asahi Kasei Kogyo) in 1923, many factories have been built, and it has developed into the number one chemical industrial city in the prefecture, producing pharmaceuticals, gunpowder, chemical fibers, plastics, etc. It is known as the town of Asahi Kasei. The Nippō Main Line and the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway run through the city. Mt. Mukabaki in the northwest is a scenic spot that represents Sobosan National Park, and Mukabaki Falls is famous. The northeast is a beautiful ria coast that belongs to the Nippō Kaigan National Park, and the family travel village Sun Beach Sumie is located there. The Minamikata Kofun Group (historic site) is located in the southwest. In February 2006, Kitaura Town and Kitakata Town of Higashiusuki District were incorporated. In March 2007, Kitagawa Town of Higashiusuki District was incorporated. ^868.02km2 . 131,182 people (2010).

宮崎県北部の市。1933年市制。中心市街は五ヶ瀬川の三角州上にあり，中世以来城下町であった。1923年日本窒素肥料（のち旭化成工業）の硫安工場が建設されてから次々に工場が立地，薬品，火薬，化学繊維，プラスチックなどを産する県下第１の化学工業都市に発展。旭化成の町といわれる。日豊本線，東九州自動車道が通じる。北西部にある行縢(むかばき)山は祖母傾国定公園を代表する景勝地で，行縢ノ滝は有名。北東部は日豊海岸国定公園に属す美しいリアス式海岸で，家族旅行村サンビーチすみえがある。南西部に南方古墳群（史跡）がある。2006年２月東臼杵郡北浦町，北方町を編入。2007年３月，東臼杵郡北川町を編入。868.02km²。13万1182人（2010）。
