Know-Nothing Party

Japanese: ノー･ナッシング党 - ノーナッシングとう（英語表記）Know‐Nothing Party

An American political party. Its official name is the American Party. It was first formed as a secret society in the 1840s, and its members responded to the organization by saying "I know nothing," hence the nickname. Its only platform was to exclude immigrants, especially Irish Catholics, from public office, and to extend the period of residence required for naturalization (to 21 years). After the 1852 election, it rose rapidly in the northern states, and in 1855 it was elected governor of six states, but as the North-South conflict over slavery intensified, it split apart, and many of its members joined the Republican Party.

アメリカの政党。正式にはアメリカ党American Partyという。最初は秘密結社として1840年代に結成され，メンバーがその組織について〈アイ･ノー･ナッシング〉と答えたのがこの俗称の由来。その唯一の政綱は，移民とくにカトリック系アイルランド人の公職からの排除と，帰化のための条件である居住期間の延長(21年)であった。1852年選挙後，北部諸州で急激に台頭し，55年には6州の知事選出を果たしたが，奴隷制をめぐる南北対立の激化とともに分裂し，多くは共和党に入った。
