Lake Notoro - Notoroko

Japanese: 能取湖 - のとろこ
Lake Notoro - Notoroko

A lagoon facing the Sea of Okhotsk in eastern Hokkaido. It belongs to Abashiri City. It is surrounded on the east and west by hills at the end of the Kitami Mountains, and is separated from the Sea of Okhotsk by a sandbar extending from the west. It has an area of 58.4 square kilometers, a circumference of 32 kilometers, and a maximum depth of 23 meters. It is almost circular, and connects to the open sea at its northeastern end. In the past, the opening was closed every autumn due to drifting sand, and was opened artificially during the snowmelt season, but a permanent lake mouth was completed in 1977 (Showa 52). Flatfish, sillago mackerel, and other fish are caught here, and scallops and oysters are cultivated here. It is part of the Abashiri Quasi-National Park, and there is a colony of Halloumi (a Hokkaido designated natural monument) near Ubaranai on the southwestern shore, and a primeval flower garden on the sandbar on the northern shore. National Route 238 runs along the southern and western shores.
