Norton, Charles Eliot
Born November 16, 1827 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
[Died] October 21, 1908. Cambridge, Massachusetts. American author. After graduating from Harvard University, he edited the North American Review from 1864 to 1868, was involved in the founding of The Nation in 1865, and taught the first art history course at Harvard from 1873 to 1898. He was also known as a friend of Carlyle, Ruskin, Emerson, and Longfellow. His book was Historical Studies of Church-Building in the Middle Ages (1880). He also translated Dante's Divine Comedy (3 volumes, 91-92) and compiled the poetry of J. Donne (2 volumes, 95).

[Died] March 10, 1584. Sharpenhoe, Bedfordshire. English poet and playwright. Entered the Inner Temple law school in 1555, became a member of Parliament a few years later, and constantly attacked Catholicism. In 1581, he was appointed an inquisitor for Catholics by Elizabeth I. He wrote poetry from an early age, and several of his works are included in the Poems of Tottle. He also translated Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion (1561), but is best known for Gorboduc (61, co-written with T. Sackville), one of the oldest tragedies in England.

イギリスの詩人,劇作家。 1555年インナー・テンプル法学院に入り,数年後に国会議員となり,終始カトリックを攻撃。 81年エリザベス1世からカトリック信徒審問官に任じられた。早くから詩を書いてその数編は『トトル詩選集』に収められ,またカルバンの『キリスト教綱要』の翻訳 (1561) もあるが,なによりもイギリス最古の悲劇の一つ『ゴーボダック』 Gorboduc (61,T.サックビルと合作) の作者として知られる。
