After graduating from Harvard University, he edited the North American Review from 1864 to 1868, was involved in the founding of The Nation in 1865, and taught the first art history course at Harvard from 1873 to 1898. He was also known as a friend of Carlyle, Ruskin, Emerson, and Longfellow. His book was Historical Studies of Church-Building in the Middle Ages (1880).
