…the name of the animals belonging to the phylum Chordata, so named because the embryo always develops a notochord. They are an important taxon in the animal kingdom, living in almost every environment, and have undergone rapid adaptive radiation, resulting in a great deal of morphological variation, with body lengths ranging from 1 mm in the urochordates to over 30 m in the blue whale.
