Born: August 31, 1908 in Fresno, California
[Died] May 18, 1981, Fresno, California. American novelist and playwright. Born to Armenian immigrants, he lost his father at a young age. After that, he took up various jobs to make a living. In 1934, he was recognized for his short story The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, and published a series of works thereafter. His many works include collections of short stories such as Little Children (1937) and My Name Is Aram (40), full-length novels such as The Human Comedy (43) and Mama I Love You (56), and plays such as The Time of Your Life (39, declined the Pulitzer Prize). All of his works are characterized by bright humor and pathos, and he stood out in 20th century American literature. His other works include an autobiography, The Bicycle Rider in Beverly Hills (52).
