Bidonshu

A sect of Chinese Buddhism. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties period in China, this sect conducted research and lectures on sectarian Buddhism mainly using treatises from the Sarvastivada school (Sarvāstivādin), a sect of Indian Buddhism. In particular, the Abhidhammacharya (Abidanshinron) written by Fasshō and the Miscellaneous Abhidhamcharya (Zō Abhidhamcharya) written by Hōkyō were used. The main proponents of this sect were Indian scholars who translated these treatises into Chinese and their Chinese monks who were their disciples. Bidam is an abbreviation of Abhidharma, an old transliteration of the Sanskrit Abhidharma and the Pali Abhidhamma (in the new translations after Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty, it is mainly transliterated as Abhidharma), so the Bidam sect was a group of researchers of the Abhidharma treatises from the old translation era, and was popular as a foundation for Buddhist studies. However, after Xuanzang's new translation of the Abhidharma treatise appeared, the old translations became less used due to their plainer style of translation, and were replaced by the Kusha and Hosso sects based on the new translations, losing all influence.

中国仏教の宗派。中国南北朝時代に、インド仏教の一部派である説一切有部(せついっさいうぶ)（サルバースティバーディンSarvāstivādin）の諸論書をおもに用いて部派仏教の研究・講義を行った一派をいう。とくに法勝(ほっしょう)の著した『阿毘曇心論(あびどんしんろん)』や法救(ほつぐ)の著した『雑(ぞう)阿毘曇心論』などが用いられた。その担い手はこれら諸論書を漢訳したインド人の学僧とその弟子の中国僧たちである。毘曇とは阿毘曇の省略語であり、サンスクリット語アビダルマAbhidharma、パーリ語アビダンマAbhidhammaの音訳の旧訳(くやく)であるから（唐の玄奘(げんじょう)以後の新訳ではおもに阿毘達磨(あびだつま)と音訳される）、毘曇宗は旧訳時代のアビダルマ論書研究者の一群であり、仏教基礎学として流行した。しかし玄奘の新訳アビダルマ論書が現れてからは、その平明な訳風のために旧訳が用いられることが少なくなり、新訳に基づく倶舎(くしゃ)宗、法相(ほっそう)宗にとってかわられ、勢力をまったく失った。
