It is one of the marginal seas of the Arctic Ocean. It is located north of Canada and Alaska, and is connected to Banks Island in the east and the Chukchi Sea in the west, and also to the Pacific Ocean through the Bering Strait. Its area is about 480,000 ^km2 . Its average depth is about 1,004 m, and its maximum depth is about 4,682 m. It is frozen all year round, except for a part that melts in August and September. The shelf is narrow, especially east of Cape Barrow. It is somewhat wider north of the mouth of the Mackenzie River in Canada, but does not exceed 144 km. The shelf slope is cut by numerous submarine canyons. The geological structure of the seafloor is a massive plateau formed by folding movements in the Mesozoic era. The seafloor sediments are composed of material transported by rivers or the Bering Strait, with the Mackenzie River contributing the most. A mixture of gravel, sand, and mud is distributed on the shelf, and the deep sea is covered by fine-grained clay. The sea is named after the British Admiral F. Beaufort, and is a member of the British Navy.

北極海の縁海の一つ。カナダとアラスカの北に位置し，東はバンクス島から，西はチュクチ海につながり，ベーリング海峡で太平洋にも通じている。面積約 48万 km²。平均深度約 1004m，最高深度約 4682m。8～9月に一部解氷するほかは一年中結氷している。陸棚は狭く，特にバロー岬の東は狭い。カナダのマッケンジー河口の北ではやや広いが 144kmをこえない。大陸棚斜面は多数の海底谷で切られている。海底の地質構造は中生代の褶曲運動によって形成された塊状台地。海底堆積物は河川またはベーリング海峡からの運搬物から成り，特にマッケンジー川からの寄与が大きい。陸棚上には礫，砂あるいは泥との混合物が分布し，深海は細粒粘土でおおわれている。堆積物中にはかなりの角閃石や鉄酸化物が含まれており，微生物を含む灰色泥は大陸棚斜面やバンクス島の北側に分布する。海の名はイギリスの提督 F.ボーフォートに由来する。
