A region in northern Canada. It is translated as the Northwest Territories. Its capital is Yellowknife. It occupies a little over one-third of the entire land area of Canada and is divided into three administrative districts: Mackenzie, Keewatin, and Franklin. Its area is 3,379,683 km2 and its population is 65,800 (1995). Two-thirds of the territory is north of the tree line, and the arid climate makes it a harsh environment for human survival. Until recently, it had little contact with modern society. About one-third of the population is Inuit (Eskimo), and one-fifth is Native American, who are primarily engaged in hunting for fur.
