A state on the Atlantic coast in the southern United States. It is one of the original 13 states, and was the 12th to join the Union in 1789. It has an area of 136,197 km2 and a population of 7.32 million (1996). The state capital is Raleigh, and the largest city is Charlotte. The state was named in 1619 after King Charles (Latin name Carolus) II of England. The state is long from east to west, and from the west it is bounded by the Appalachian Mountains, the Piedmont Plateau, the Coastal Plain, and the Atlantic Coast.
