North Carolina

A state on the Atlantic coast in the southern United States. It is one of the original 13 states, and was the 12th to join the Union in 1789. It has an area of 136,197 ^km2 and a population of 7.32 million (1996). The state capital is Raleigh, and the largest city is Charlotte. The state was named in 1619 after King Charles (Latin name Carolus) II of England. The state is long from east to west, and from the west it is bounded by the Appalachian Mountains, the Piedmont Plateau, the Coastal Plain, and the Atlantic Coast. The highest point is Mount Mitchell (2,037 m), the highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains.

アメリカ合衆国南部，大西洋岸の州。略称N.C.。独立13州の一つで，連邦加入1789年，12番目。面積13万6197km²，人口732万(1996)。州都ローリー，最大都市シャーロット。州名は1619年に当時のイギリス国王チャールズ(ラテン名カロルス)2世にちなんで命名された。東西に長い州で，西よりアパラチア山脈，ピードモント台地，コースタル･プレーン(海岸平野)，大西洋岸へと続く。最高点はアパラチア山脈最高峰のミッチェル山(2037m)。
