Lake Shirakaba

Japanese: 白樺湖 - しらかばこ

This artificial lake is located in the northern part of Chino City, in central Nagano Prefecture. It was built in 1946 (Showa 21) as a warm water reservoir for agricultural use. Its area is 0.36 square kilometers. It is located at an altitude of 1,416 meters, directly below Mt. Tateshina. At the time of its completion, there were dead trees in the lake and the former course of a stream was visible on the bottom of the lake. It was named Lake Shirakaba in 1954, and tourism began in the early 1950s, with inns and restaurants lining the lakeside and many pensions in the surrounding area. There are buses from JR Chino Station on the Chuo Main Line and Sakudaira Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and the Venus Line tourist road also runs through the lake. There are many ruins on the lake shore, including the Jomon ruins of Gozaiwa.

長野県中央部、茅野市(ちのし)北部にある人造湖。1946年（昭和21）農業用温水溜池(ためいけ)として築造された。面積0.36平方キロメートル。蓼科山(たてしなやま)直下の標高1416メートルの地にあり、竣工(しゅんこう)当時は湖中に枯れ木が立ち、湖底にかつての小川の流路が見えるほどであった。白樺湖と名づけられたのは1954年からで、昭和30年代初めから観光化が始まり、湖畔には旅館や飲食店などが建ち並び、周辺にはペンションも多い。JR中央本線茅野駅、北陸新幹線佐久平駅からバスの便があり、観光道路ビーナスラインも通じる。湖岸には縄文遺跡の御座岩(ございわ)など遺跡も多い。
