Japanese: ハリアリ(針蟻) - ハリアリ（英語表記）ponerine ant

Common name for insects belonging to the Hymenoptera, Insecta, Ponerinae subfamily. They are distributed all over the world, especially in humid tropical regions. There are about 30 species in 13 genera in Japan, including the sawtoothed ant Amblyopone silvestrii , the cotton-toothed ant Proceratium watasei , the giant ant Brachyponera chinensis , the blind ant Cryptopone sauteri , and the trap-jaw ant Odontomachus monticola .

膜翅目昆虫科ハリアリ亜科Ponerinaeに属する昆虫の通称。全世界に分布し，とくに湿潤な熱帯地方には多くの種類が分布している。日本産のものはノコギリハリアリAmblyopone silvestrii，ワタセハリアリProceratium watasei，オオハリアリBrachyponera chinensis，メクラハリアリCryptopone sauteri，アギトアリOdontomachus monticolaなど13属約30種類。
