Times of India

Times of India
One of India's leading English-language dailies. The name was formed in 1861 when the Bombay Telegraph and Courier and the Bombay Times and Standard merged. It was originally a British-owned newspaper, but around the time of India's independence, its publisher Bennett, Coleman & Co. was acquired by the Indian Sahu Jain conglomerate. It is based in Bombay and has close ties with the local business community. In the late 1950s, circulation was 130,000 copies for the Bombay and Delhi editions combined, but by the early 1980s it had risen to around 400,000 copies, and new editions were also published in Ahmedabad and Lucknow.
