It is a biennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae), commonly found in lowland grasslands. It has a large, thick, upright stem that grows to a height of 1-2 meters. The leaves are yellowish brown and many are pinnately divided. It produces numerous pale yellow flower heads about 2 cm in diameter from August to October. The florets that make up the flower heads are only ray flowers. The black achenes have pappus and are wind-dispersed. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the flowers resemble common sowweed and bloom in autumn. It is widely distributed in Japan, Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. It is in the same genus as lettuce, and a closely related species is the forage plant agave, but common sowweed is not used for food or forage. Wild species in the same genus include wild sowweed and Ezomurasakinigana.

キク科（APG分類：キク科）の一、二年草で、低地の草地に普通にみられる。大形で、直立する茎は太く、高さ1～2メートルになる。葉は黄褐色を帯び、多くは羽状に分裂する。8～10月ごろ径2センチメートルほどの淡黄色の頭花を多数つける。頭花をつくる小花は舌状花のみ。黒色の痩果(そうか)には冠毛があり、風散布される。和名は、花がノゲシに似て秋に咲くことによる。日本、朝鮮、中国、東南アジアに広く分布する。レタスと同属で、近縁種に飼料植物リュウゼツサイがあるが、アキノノゲシは食用にも飼料にも利用されていない。同属の野生種にヤマニガナ、エゾムラサキニガナなどがある。
