The Utatsuyama Riots

...Others included the Ai-ikechi, who rented farmland from farmers, and the residents of temples and shrines under the control of the Magistrate of Temples and Shrines, who made up the low-income class. They often caused riots and disturbances, such as the well-known Utatsuyama Riot of 1858 (Ansei 5), in which the Nanane Jizo statue stands in memory of the ringleaders who were executed. The museum is home to crafts such as metalwork (inlay, etc.), lacquerware (maki-e, etc.), woodwork, and pottery (Ohi ware), which were started by the third feudal lord, Toshitsune, and completed during the fifth lord, Tsunanori, as well as the vast collection of books in the Sonkeikaku Library and the Hyakuko Hisho (a collection of specimens of crafts)....
