A scholar-monk of ancient Baekje origin. In 608, he accompanied the Japanese envoy to the Sui Dynasty, Ono no Imoko, to the sea, where he studied Buddhism and the I Ching, before returning to Japan in 632. He is said to have lectured on the I Ching to Nakatomi no Kamatari and others. During the Taika Reforms, he became a kokuhaku along with Takamuku no Kuromaro. 古代の百済(くだら)系の学僧。608年遣隋使小野妹子に従って渡海,仏教のほか易学などを学び,632年帰朝。中臣鎌足(なかとみのかまたり)らに周易の講義をしたという。大化改新の際,高向玄理(たかむくのくろまろ)とともに国博士となる。
