〘Noun〙 (Abbreviation of the transliteration of kalpa, " kalpa waves" )① A Buddhist term. An extremely long period of time. Generally, according to the teachings of the Miscellaneous Agama Sutra, it is said to be a long period of time that will never end even if a heavenly being wipes a large stone measuring one yojana (40 ri) square with a thin cloth once every hundred years, and the stone wears away, or it is said to be a long period of time that will never end even if a castle measuring 40 ri square is filled with poppies and once every hundred years, one grain is removed and the poppies disappear. 〘名〙 (kalpa の音訳「劫波(こうは)」の略)① 仏語。きわめて長い時間。一般に、雑阿含経の説くところに従って、天人が方一由旬(四十里)の大石を薄衣で百年に一度払い、石は摩滅しても終わらない長い時間といい、また、方四十里の城にケシを満たして、百年に一度、一粒ずつとり去りケシはなくなっても終わらない長い時間という。なお、劫には小中大の大きさの段階があり、また劫の性質としてそれぞれ二十小劫からなる成(じょう)・住・壊(え)・空の四劫があって、循環すると説かれる。※宇津保(970‐999頃)俊蔭「こふの変はるまでおとづれ給はぬを」※太平記(14C後)一八「百千劫(コウ)の間に舌を暢(の)べて説く共尽くべからず」 〔無量寿経‐下〕② 囲碁で、一目(いちもく)を双方で交互に取りうる形のとき、先方に取られたあと、すぐには取り返せない約束のため、他の急所に打って、相手がそれに応じたすきに、一目を取り返すかたちで一目を争うこと。また、その繰り返し。劫争い。※源氏(1001‐14頃)空蝉「碁うちはてて〈略〉このわたりのこうをこそなどいへど」
