Nobi earthquake

Japanese: 濃尾地震 - のうびじしん
Nobi earthquake

At around 6:38 on October 28, 1891 (Meiji 24), an earthquake occurred across Aichi and Gifu prefectures. Its magnitude was 8.0. 7,273 people died. 222,501 houses were completely or partially destroyed, 20,067 roads were destroyed, 10,392 bridges were damaged, 7,177 levees collapsed, and 10,224 landslides occurred, but the areas most affected were Mino and Owari. This earthquake created the Neodani Fault Zone, which stretches for more than 80 kilometers from north-northwest to south-southeast. In particular, the area around Midori, Neo Village, Motosu County, Gifu Prefecture (now Neo Midori, Motosu City) rose about 6 meters on the west side and shifted about 2 meters to the south-southeast. There were many aftershocks, with Gifu Prefecture seeing 720 felt aftershocks in October. This earthquake caused an increase in hot spring water over a wide area, from the Iwashiro region in western Fukushima Prefecture and the Izu region of Shizuoka Prefecture to the Mimasaka region of Okayama Prefecture in the west.
