Eizan version

Publications of Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei. The oldest clearly identified Eizan edition is the Lotus Sutra Three Great Sections and its commentaries, which consist of 80 volumes bound in paper and bound with lacquer, published between 1279 (Kōan 2) and 1296 (Einin 4) at the request of Gon Daisōzu Shosen as a donation to Hiyoshi-sanno. A goinbon from the Muromachi period is kept at the Daitōkyū Memorial Library. The Eizan edition from the Kamakura period is only a part of this, but when movable type printing was first introduced in Japan in the early Edo period, the temples within Enryakuji Temple also published several dozen copies of the book using this technology between 1601 (Keichō 6) and 1634 (Kan'ei 11). These are generally referred to as Eizan editions. Enryaku-ji Temple was close to Kyoto, had a wealthy finances, and had many learned monks, so it is likely that the need to be self-sufficient in Tendai-related books for study led to active publication of printed books. After the mid-Kan'ei period (1624-1644), the Eizan edition rapidly declined and was replaced by publication by bookstores. Currently, the largest number of Eizan editions are preserved in the Eizan Bunko in Sakamoto (Shiga Prefecture) and Jigen-do (Tenkai-zo) in Nikko.
