Founded in 1946 under the jurisdiction of the Agricultural Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, this is an agricultural social science research institute. With the slogan "freedom of research," it has continued to conduct unique interdisciplinary research to this day. Its research structure covers a wide range of areas, including planning research on policies, income, distribution, employment, trade, and regions; research on rural economy, agricultural management, rural society, and farmers; and overseas research on Europe, the United States, the former Soviet Union, China, and Southeast Asia. It also conducts regional research with branches in Hokkaido, the snowy regions, and Kyushu. In addition to its journal "General Agricultural Research," it publishes "Research Series" and other publications.
