Kütahya (English spelling)
A city in the center of western Turkey, capital of the province of the same name. It is located 60 km southwest of Eskisehir, on the Porsuk River, which flows at the foot of the hills. In ancient times, it was known as Kotiaeum, and was on the route from the Sea of Marmara to Mesopotamia, and its fate was shared with the rise and fall of the trade route. A medieval Byzantine town, it was occupied by the Seljuk Turks at the end of the 11th century, and after passing through Turkmen rule, it was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire in 1429. In the 16th century, it was known as a center of pottery, supplying tiles and painted pottery (faience) to mosques and churches both in Turkey and abroad. At the end of the 19th century, it was overtaken by the development of neighboring Eskisehir, but by the middle of the 20th century, industry flourished again and it regained prosperity. In addition to industries such as sugar refining, leather tanning, sodium nitrate, pottery, and carpet manufacturing, there are also handicrafts such as meerschaum pipes. It is connected to Afyonkarahisar and Eskisehir by railway and highway. Population: 139,440 (1990).
