A type of grass that produces edible bamboo shoots, it has long been used as a wild vegetable in northern Japan (illustration). It is also called kurile-zasa. It grows naturally in mountainous areas at altitudes of 700m or higher north of central Honshu, forming large colonies in broadleaf forests and swamps. It is so named because the stems curve from the tips of its densely branched underground stems and emerge diagonally above ground. In some regions, it is called azumatake, sasatakenoko, or himetakenoko. The aboveground stems grow to a height of 2-3m, are about 2cm thick, and are highly branched.
