Nightwear - Nightgown

Japanese:
Nightwear - Nightgown

Clothing worn when going to bed. It is also called nightclothes or pajamas. Nightwear generally refers to Japanese clothing, which is considered a type of bedding and is not intended as indoor clothing worn in the bedroom. Western-style nightwear corresponds to pajamas and negligees. Nightwear is the same style as yukata, but men's nightwear is wide-sleeved, made of Oka cotton, and often has a plaid pattern, while women's nightwear has short sleeves in the Genroku style, and often has floral patterns. The length is double for both men and women. In recent years, ready-made items made from two layers of gauze are available commercially. The best fabric is cotton fabric, which is soft to the touch, absorbs moisture, and retains heat. To keep warm, thick fabrics such as towels and flannel are used, which retain heat. In the past, there was no separate clothing called nightwear. It was customary to sleep with the clothes one was wearing draped over the skin, and everyday underwear and undergarments were used as nightwear. Since the early modern period, nobles and samurai wore kosode (short sleeved white wedding kimono) as nightwear. Among common people, clothes were wrapped around the body rather than worn against the skin to keep warm, and this custom gave rise to the term "nightwear."
