…After the war, Britain sought reconciliation with the Boers, and in 1910 the Union of South Africa was formed, consisting of the four provinces of Cape, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange Free State. The government of Louis Botha (1862-1919), who became the first Prime Minister of the Federation, enacted the Mines and Labour Act, known as the first racial discrimination law, in 1911 to protect white workers in the mines, and in 1913 enacted the Natives Land Act, which isolated Africans in areas designated for natives. During World War I, the Federation of South Africa sided with the Allies and occupied German South-West Africa (now Namibia), making it a mandate territory of the League of Nations after the war. …
