(Brother) Edmond (Louis Antoine Huot) de 26 May 1822, Nancy - 16 July 1896, Seine-et-Oise, Champs-Rosées (Younger brother) Jules (Alfred Huot) de 1830.12.17. Paris - 1870.6.20. Paris Two French writer brothers. Their father was an officer in the army of Napoleon. With close cooperation from each other, they conducted detailed research into the society and customs of 18th-century France, and wrote many naturalistic novels, such as Renée Mauperin (1864), Germinie Lacerteux (64), and Manette Salomon (67), based on their ideal of portraying the entire complex and subtle aspects of contemporary human life in a refined and objective style. Edmond's research into ukiyo-e prints, such as Hokousaï (96), published after his brother's death, had a great influence on modern European art, especially in terms of the technique of stylization. The Journal (87-96, complete edition published 1956-58), which records their literary life, is interesting not only as a record of the brothers' bitter writing life, but also as a source of information on the writers, artists, and customs of the time. After Edmond's death, according to his will, the Académie Goncourt was founded in 1902 using the brothers' inheritance as a fund, and it awards the Goncourt Prize.
