A marine fish of the family Padae in the order Perciformes that lives in cold currents (illustration). It is widely distributed in the North Pacific Ocean, but in Japan it inhabits northern Japan from Miyagi Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture northward. In Akita, it is called Kaminariuo (lightning fish) because thunder is often heard around November when it comes ashore to spawn. In Takada and Noe, Niigata Prefecture, it is called Shimaaji, and in Tottori, it is called Kahata or Shirohata. Its body is slightly elongated and laterally compressed, with no scales or lateral line. The dorsal side of its body is yellowish brown with irregular black-brown spots. The abdomen is white. It reaches a body length of 28 cm. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 100 to 400 meters, but during the spawning season in November and December, it forms large schools and appears in seaweed beds several meters deep, where it lays egg masses on seaweed and other materials.
