An automated production system that can handle small-lot production of a wide variety of products. Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is an abbreviation for flexible manufacturing system. Since the 1970s, as the market has come to demand a wider variety of products, the idea was conceived of a single production system that could handle a wide variety of tasks. By linking the logistics between several NC machine tools (→ numerically controlled machine tools) and an automated warehouse with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and robots, the transportation, installation, processing, and removal of workpieces are integrated into a single system, while a central control computer centrally controls and manages the entire system to handle a wide variety of processing requirements. The FMS concept is applied not only to processing, but also to the fields of assembly and inspection.
