Narai (English spelling)

Narai (English spelling)
?-1688
The fourth king of the Prasathorn dynasty of the Ayutthaya dynasty in Thailand (reigned 1657-88). Narai is another name for the god Vishnu (Narayana), and is said to have been named after the superhuman legend surrounding the king. He conspired with his uncle to remove his older brother, who had succeeded their father, King Prasathorn, and then killed his uncle as well, becoming king himself. He enriched the royal treasury by actively engaging in overseas trade using overseas Chinese merchants. Even in Nagasaki during the period of national isolation, there is a record of King Narai's trading ship, operated by a Chinese person, arriving there as a "Siamese Yakata Shidashisen."
