It is the language of the Brahmans (Hindu priestly class, also called Baung) and Chhetris (warrior class) of Nepal. It has about 8 million speakers. It is a part of the Pahāri language, and is also called Kaskra, Gorkhali, and Parbati. After the unification of the country, it has also been used as a lingua franca.
