A clause attached to a contract that automatically stipulates that in the event of the debtor's default on the debt, the debtor will lose all contractual rights or rights to specific objects without the creditor's special intention. It is often used in installment sales when the buyer is late in fulfilling the debt. Although it is an act that is conditional on default, it is against public order and good morals if it puts the debtor at an unfair disadvantage. The Installment Sales Act (1961) requires that a notice of at least 20 days be given to terminate the contract in the event of default, so to that extent, a forfeiture clause is excluded.
