A city in western Namibia, southern Africa. It is located at the mouth of the Swakop River on the Atlantic coast. It has a population of 18,000 (1999). During the German colonial period, it was the main port in the region, but after World War I it was replaced by Walvis Bay, 30 km to the south. It is now a seaside resort town that is crowded with beachgoers from October to March.
