...All of the above rudders use the lift acting on the rudder blade to create a turning force. However, there are other rudders that obtain turning force by manipulating the direction of the thrust from the screw propeller. These include the Kort nozzle rudders, which house the screw propeller inside a cylindrical nozzle and rotate the nozzle around a vertical axis to change the direction of thrust, and the Kitchener rudders, which surround the screw propeller with two semicircular cylinders and provide the ship with thrust or turning force by opening and closing these cylinders and changing their direction.
[Steering engine]
The simplest steering method is to directly operate the rudder attached to the top of the rudder stock with a human hand, but this is only applicable to very small ships. Manual steering, in which the rotation of the steering wheel is transmitted to the stern by a chain, rope, or pole to move the rudder, can be applied to somewhat larger ships, but since the power source is human power, there are limitations.
