The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of an object by 1 K. Depending on whether the unit of heat is the joule or calorie, the unit of heat capacity is J/K or cal/K. Heat capacity is proportional to mass, and the heat capacity per unit mass is called specific heat, while the heat capacity per atomic weight or molecular weight is called atomic heat (specific heat × atomic weight) or molecular heat (specific heat × molecular weight). Molecular heat is also called molar heat, molar specific heat, or molar heat capacity.
