Lippmann

German-born American biochemist. He studied at the University of Königsberg, the University of Berlin, and the University of Munich, and obtained his MD from the University of Munich in 1924. After a fellowship at the University of Amsterdam, he returned to the University of Königsberg to study chemistry, became an assistant at the Kaiser Wilhelm Society Institute, and obtained his Ph.D. in 1927. He then conducted research at the University of Heidelberg, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society Institute, the Rockefeller Institute, and the Carlsberg Institute of Biological Research. In 1939, he traveled to the United States and conducted research at Cornell University, Harvard University, and other universities. He established the concept of high-energy phosphate bonds such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and in 1945 discovered coenzyme A (CoA), which plays an important role in metabolism such as the TCA cycle (citric acid cycle). For this achievement, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1953 together with H. Krebs.
