...This is because both are descendants of Habasha (the origin of the word Abyssinia), the main inhabitant of the ancient kingdom of Aksum, but the term Abyssinia is now rarely used. The Amhara call their native language Amharinya, and the Tigrinya call it Habasha, and the two share 56% of their basic vocabulary. Both belong to the Ethio-Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family and are derived from the ancient Geez language.
