Takamagahara myth

Japanese: 高天原神話 - たかまがはらしんわ

In the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki mythology, we see a three-tiered mythological world structure: the heavenly realm of Takamagahara, the earthly realm of Ashihara no Nakatsukuni, and the underworld of Yomi no Kuni (or Ne no Kuni). Each has its own unique significance in the mythology of kingship, and they are not simply heaven, earth, and underworld. Takamagahara in particular was a special world from which the divinity of kingship originated. In the Kojiki, Takamagahara is described as having already existed in the beginning. It was the residence of the heavenly gods, who were in conflict with the earthly gods, who were entrenched in Ashihara no Nakatsukuni.

記紀神話には，天界高天原，地上界葦原中国（あしはらのなかつくに），地下界黄泉国（よみのくに）(もしくは根の国)という3層の神話的世界構造がみられる。それぞれに王権神話における固有の意義をにない，単に天，地上，地下というだけではない。とりわけ高天原は，王権の神聖性がそこに由来する特別の世界であった。《古事記》では，高天原は原初にすでにあったように書かれている。それは，葦原中国に蟠踞する国津神（くにつかみ）と対立する天津神（あまつかみ）の居所であった。
