1232 to 37‐96 French canon law scholar. His French name was Guillaume Durand. Born into an aristocratic family, he studied law in Lyon and then Bologna, where he lectured on canon law both in Bologna and in Modena. However, he was soon called to Rome, where he was appointed to various important positions by successive popes, and also became the Bishop of Mende. He wrote many books, but his main one is Speculum judiciale (1271-76, revised 1289-91). It summarizes the results of Roman canon law up to that point, drawing on his own judicial and administrative experience, and became a standard work for later generations.
