Danjogunto - Danjogunto

Japanese:
Danjogunto - Danjogunto

A group of islands in the East China Sea, 72 km southwest of Fukue Island in the Goto Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture. All of the islands belong to Goto City. In addition to Oshima and Meshima, the islands also include Kuroki, Hanaguri, and Yorishima reefs. The area is about 5 square kilometers. The islands are hilly and made of hard welded tuff from the Tertiary Period, and the entire island is surrounded by sea cliffs with well-developed columnar joints. Located on the course of the Tsushima Warm Current, the waters off the coast are bright with a transparency of 50 meters, and are rich in fish such as scorpionfish and dwarf gnats. It is also a habitat for coral, and since the end of the Meiji period, there has been a history of coral harvesting ships based in Tomie being shipwrecked there. It is also a base for migratory birds that cross the East China Sea. The entire island is uninhabited, but there is a 119-meter lighthouse on the cliffs of Byobugaura on Mejima. In addition to protecting navigation, a staff member was stationed there to provide weather reports and other services, but in 2006 this was automated and is now unmanned. There are remnants of fishing port facilities in Maura on Ojima, but there is no permanent population. The entire area has been designated a national natural monument (natural conservation area), and it is forbidden to collect plants or animals, as well as to land or fish without permission. It is home to rare plants and animals, including the Japanese bush warbler, which is designated a national natural monument and special bird species.
