According to Einstein's special theory of relativity, time passes differently in coordinate systems in which objects move at a constant speed. A time interval measured in a coordinate system in which an object appears to be stationary, that is, a coordinate system fixed to the object, is called the object's proper time. A time interval measured in a coordinate system in which an object appears to be moving at a certain speed v is extended to x times the proper time, where c is the speed of light in a vacuum.

A.アインシュタインの特殊相対性理論によれば，互いに等速度運動している座標系では時間の進み方が異なる。物体が静止しているようにみえる座標系，つまり物体に固定された座標系ではかった時間間隔をその物体の固有時という。物体がある速さ v で運動しているようにみえる座標系ではかった時間間隔は，固有時の倍に延びる。ただし，c は真空中の光速度である。
