A village in Minamitsuru County in the southeastern part of Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 5,296 (1995). Located at the eastern foot of Mt. Fuji, with Lake Yamanaka in the center. It borders Shizuoka Prefecture to the south and Kanagawa Prefecture to the east. Part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, the village relies mainly on tourism, centered around Lake Yamanaka, with the tertiary industry making up over 80% of the employed population. Pure spruce forests (ten) can be seen from Lake Yamanaka to Oshino Village. National Route 138, which runs through the west, crosses Kagosaka Pass and reaches Shizuoka Prefecture. 山梨県南東部,南都留(みなみつる)郡の村。人口5296(1995)。富士山東麓に位置し,中央に山中湖がある。南は静岡県,東は神奈川県に接する。富士箱根伊豆国立公園に含まれ,山中湖を中心とする観光業が主体の村で,第3次産業人口が就業人口の80%以上を占める。山中湖から忍野(おしの)村にかけてハリモミの群生純林(天)が見られる。西部を通る国道138号線は,籠坂峠を越えて静岡県に至る。【萩原 毅】
