Stone plate - Ishizara

Japanese:
Stone plate - Ishizara

A stone tool made of a large, flat, rough-surfaced pebble such as andesite or quartz trachyte with a concave depression in the center. It was named after its elliptical, dish-like shape in plan. It is a stone tool characteristic of the Jomon period. Early stone plates are often small and flat with a slight depression in the center. In the middle period, stone plates with a regular planar shape and an opening on one side of the edge appeared. In the late and final periods, examples can be seen with legs or a cutting board-like stand in the center. It is thought to have been used as a cooking utensil in combination with a grinding stone to crush and pulverize plant foods (nuts, etc.). There are also examples with iron oxide attached to the central depression, which suggests that it may have been used for purposes other than cooking. It is commonly found in eastern Japan, particularly during the Middle Jomon period.
