1854‐1934 French military officer and marshal. Born into an old military family in Lorraine, he served as a cavalry officer in Algeria and France. His tactical skills in the pacification of Indochina (1894-97) and Madagascar (1897-1902) were recognized, and he returned to Algeria and rose to the rank of general. After serving as commander of the 10th Corps in Rennes, he became commissioner-general (governor-general) of Morocco in 1912 after the signing of the Protectorate Treaty. He served in this position for 1925, except for a brief period as Minister of War during World War I. His rule was stable, based on military oppression and appeasement through inducements.
