French military officer and marshal. Born into an old military family in Lorraine, he served as a cavalry officer in Algeria and France. His tactical skills in the pacification of Indochina (1894-97) and Madagascar (1897-1902) were recognized, and he returned to Algeria and rose to the rank of general. After serving as commander of the 10th Corps in Rennes, he became commissioner-general (governor-general) of Morocco in 1912 after the signing of the Protectorate Treaty. He served in this position for 1925, except for a brief period as Minister of War during World War I. His rule was stable, based on military oppression and appeasement through inducements.

フランスの軍人，元帥。ロレーヌの古い軍人の家系に生まれ，騎兵士官としてアルジェリア，本国勤務の後，インドシナ(1894‐97)，マダガスカル(1897‐1902)の平定で作戦手腕を認められ，再びアルジェリアに転じて将官に進んだ。レンヌの第10軍団長を経て1912年，保護条約調印後のモロッコで総弁務官(総督)となり，第1次大戦中の一時期陸相に転じたほかは，25年まで在任した。その統治は武力による弾圧と利益誘導による懐柔によって安定した支配を築いた。
