…A large-scale anti-Soviet peasant revolt that took place in the summer of 1920 to the summer of 1921 in Tambov province in the central agricultural region of southwestern Russia, one of the peasant revolts in the latter half of the civil war. Aleksandr S. Antonov (1888-1922) had been a member of the Socialist Revolutionaries since 1906 and was the leader of the revolt. Tambov province, along with Ryazan province in the central agricultural region and Kazan and Penza provinces in the middle Volga region, was a region with a strong peasant movement even before the October Revolution, and was also the site of severe grain requisitions (1918-21) throughout the civil war. …

...At the end of the 19th century, the Moscow-Saratov railway passed through the area, and the area developed through the trade of grain and livestock. Traditionally, the peasant movement was active, and in 1918 the Soviet power was established, but in August 1920, a peasant revolt led by A. Antonov broke out in the village of Kamenka in Kirsanov County near the city, triggered by opposition to the Soviet government's food policy. By the summer of the following year, tens of thousands of peasants fought partisan battles, resulting in many casualties (Antonov Revolt). ...
