A visible trace made along the path of a high-speed charged particle through a material. In a cloud chamber, the charged particle produces ions that act as nuclei to produce a train of fog droplets; in a bubble chamber, a train of bubbles is produced. In a spark chamber, the ions act as triggers to produce a train of light spots from the discharge. In a nuclear emulsion, charged particles excite silver halide, which after development produces a train of silver particles. In solids other than metals, highly ionizing charged particles disrupt the atomic arrangement, and when the solid is etched with an appropriate chemical, holes are produced. These devices are called track detectors. The type and energy of the particle can be determined from the shape, length, number of ions per unit length, curvature of the track in a magnetic field, and minute bending of the track due to scattering.
