777‐857 A physician in the Abbasid Caliphate. Born as the youngest son of a father who was a pharmacist and court physician in Baghdad. He initially aspired to become a priest, but studied at the medical school in Jundishapur and became a professor. He later served as court physician to several caliphs, including Ma'mun. He collected literature to translate Greek medical books. He also helped build Bayt al-Hikma (the House of Wisdom). His main work, Diseases of the Eye, is the oldest surviving Arabic book on ophthalmology.
