A physician in the Abbasid Caliphate. Born as the youngest son of a father who was a pharmacist and court physician in Baghdad. He initially aspired to become a priest, but studied at the medical school in Jundishapur and became a professor. He later served as court physician to several caliphs, including Ma'mun. He collected literature to translate Greek medical books. He also helped build Bayt al-Hikma (the House of Wisdom). His main work, Diseases of the Eye, is the oldest surviving Arabic book on ophthalmology. It lists symptoms unknown to the Greeks, and introduces new drugs such as "alum from Yemen," "antimony from Isfahan," and "camphor from Sumatra."

アッバース朝の医者。薬剤師であり，バグダードの宮廷の侍医でもあった父の末子として生まれる。初め聖職者を志すが，ジュンディーシャープールの医学校に学び，教授に就任。後にマームーン以下数代のカリフの侍医を務めた。ギリシア語医書の翻訳のため，文献を収集。バイト･アルヒクマ(〈知恵の館〉の意)建設にも協力した。主著《眼の疾患》は現存するアラビア眼科医書で最古のもの。ギリシア人の知らぬ症状を収録し，〈イエメンの明礬〉〈イスファハーンのアンチモニー〉〈スマトラ産樟脳〉などの新薬物を紹介した。
