Ibn Mājid

Japanese: イブン･マージド（英語表記）Ibn Mājid

In the mid-15th century, he was active as a mu'allim, a pilot for voyages in the Indian Ocean. His birth and death years are unknown. His father and uncle were also famous pilots. He is known to have written 22 books on navigation, compass points, astronomy, geodesy, etc. These books are, so to speak, a refined and compiled maritime knowledge possessed by Arab-Persian navigators who had been active in the Indian Ocean for several thousand years, and their advanced navigational techniques and precise and detailed geographical knowledge are astonishing.

15世紀半ば，インド洋航海の水先案内人mu‘allimとして活躍した。生没年不詳。彼の父と叔父もまた有名な水先案内人であった。航路･方位指針･天文･測地法などに関する22種類の著書が知られている。これらの著書は，いわばインド洋を舞台として数千年にわたって活躍してきたアラブ･ペルシア系航海民のもつ航海知識を精練し集大成したものであって，その高度な航海技術と精緻で詳細な地理的知識には驚くべきものがある。
